Thanks to RadarOnline, I now have a better idea of who our potential presidential front-runners are, and where they are in the race. The key to my understanding? The perfect combination of Myspace and Saved By The Bell.

Immigration issues rocked the Republican field at Tuesday night's debate, with all but Senator John McCain finding serious flaws with various parts of the legislation. Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama are essentially tied for the Democratic presidential nomination, according to a USA TODAY/Gallup Poll, the first time that the New York senator hasn't clearly led the field.

In a break with the tradition of recent presidential campaigns, most of the major presidential candidates aren't releasing their income-tax filings. That means voters are likely to know less about the income sources, personal wealth and charitable inclinations of the presidential candidates than in any election in the past generation.

What do these monochromatic candidates offer? Without exception, war and more war. No exit from Iraq. New confrontation with Iran, with only former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani mumbling a hint of caution. Wartime for America. All this is done while invoking Ronald Reagan's sunny optimism. But they've forgotten Reagan's basic caution.

"The U.S., with its war, racism, sexual restlessness, religious confusion, and economic disparity, is a nest of festering conflicts. Politics is the set of stories we tell ourselves as a way of seeking resolution. The campaign already shows how the beginnings of those stories are usually happy and why their endings rarely are."

The congregation at the First Baptist Church in Selma, Alabama, was in full voice yesterday morning when the smiling face of Senator Hillary Clinton peered from a door behind the pulpit and saw she was already a little late. " Have a little talk with Jesus," the hymn began. "Tell him about your troubles."

Candidates subjecting themselves to the biting wit and ribbing of faux newsmen and comedians seems like a modern-day version of cruel and unusual punishment - and an oddity when much of politics has become heavily scripted.
